Heaven Is Real | heaven is for real

In a world driven by here-and-now priorities and tangible goals, too many of us refuse to think much about life after death. We can’t wrap our minds around it, therefore we dismiss it altogether as “irrelevant.”  But it would do us all well to take pause on occasion focus our hearts on the afterlife, not only because we will soon be going there but because a clear vision of it will serve to temper our actions here on earth. C.S. Lewis nailed it when he wrote:

If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next… It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. Aim at Heaven and you will get earth ‘thrown in’: aim at earth and you will get neither.

Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey Into The Afterlife

“Near-death experiences, or NDEs, are controversial. Thousands of people have had them, but many in the scientific community have argued that they are impossible. Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those people.

A highly trained neurosurgeon who had operated on thousands of brains in the course of his career, Alexander knew that what people of faith call the “soul” is really a product of brain chemistry. NDEs, he would have been the first to explain, might feel real to the people having them, but in truth they are simply fantasies produced by brains under extreme stress.

Then came the day when Dr. Alexander’s own brain was attacked by an extremely rare illness. The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion—and in essence makes us human— shut down completely. For seven days Alexander lay in a hospital bed in a deep coma. Then, as his doctors weighed the possibility of stopping treatment, Alexander’s eyes popped open. He had come back.” (from an Amazon Review)

Dr. Eben Alexander’s near-death experience is the most astounding I have heard in more than four decades of studying this phenomenon. [He] is living proof of an afterlife.

Proof of HeavenMy Take: A Real Page Turner…

Dr. Eban Alexander is a brilliant man with a remarkable testimony. His world was rocked by a sudden early morning attack of Ecoli Bacterial Meningitis that shut down the cortex of his brain. For 7 days he was in a coma and during this time he had an out of body experience that completely changed his life, converting him from hardened skeptic to a passionate believer in an intimate and personal creator God.

Once I started reading the book I couldn’t to put it down. It is well written, with a storyline that captivates and inspires. Alexander is brimming with passion and conviction throughout. There is nothing nonchalant about his account (which I have seen in other accounts.) I believe his encounter with heaven was authentic and his recovery nothing short of a miracle. I also believe he has been deeply impacted by what happened to him during those 7 days.  I’ll admit that I do not feel comfortable with some of his conclusions  and the lessons he has carried forward from his experience. But I can see why he is going it about it the way he is. As a highly trained doctor with a scientific bent, he seems determined to find a way to recreate this heavenly encounter on this side of eternity, by opening himself up to turning to Eastern mysticism and meditation. Having said that, I am still moved by the depth and authenticity of his story–and I  pray that Eban Alexander comes to know Jesus as his Lord and Savior.

As I ponder this it story, I can’t help but think it bears faint resemblance to that of the Saul of Tarsus who was confronted by a bright light on the road to Damascus. He saw a bright light and heard a voice: the voice of Jesus. Because of Saul’s religious background there was a framework for him to recognize who Jesus is, but because this encounter was so outside the box, he needed to be nurtured by someone who could watch over him and disciple him in the Way. So God instructed him to find Ananias.  (Acts 9:3-18) Saul was rejected by his religious peers and held at a distance by Christians who weren’t sure of the credibility of his story.

Eban Alexander is in a hard place: rejected by his medical peers who think he has lost his marbles and kept at a distance by many evangelical Christians because he is acting “outside the box” and has not come into the fold.  (I am not in implying that Eban Alexander is a Paul, and I only see a faint parallel.)

For me, “Proof of Heaven” was an unforgettable read.
