A Preacher’s Goldmine | Nelson's Preacher's Sourcebook

A preacher's goldmineMY TAKE: A Preacher’s Goldmine!

One of the great fears of any pastor is to bore people with the Word of God. To escape this pitfall, preaching is a craft that should continually be developed and refined. Generally speaking, there is never enough time in the pastor’s week to do this preparation justice. But the good news is that in spite of all of the responsibilities and distractions pastors have throughout the week, there are some great resource tools, like the Nelson’s Annual Preacher’s Sourcebook series (by Thomas Nelson Publishing), that can work wonders.

Like the two volumes preceding it, Nelson’s Annual Preacher’s Sourcebook, Volume 3 is a treasure-chest of seminal thoughts, sample outlines, and Biblical insights from a wide range of respected preachers across the country.

O.S. Hawkins, former pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, sets out to explain the purpose of this volume:

“It is not designed as an ‘easy fix’ for late Saturday night sermon preparation.”

Rather, it is a sourcebook “designed to lay alongside all your other tools of word studies, exegesis, commentaries, prayer and analytical thought that goes into a fully developed and crafted sermon.”

It is an impressive sourcebook indeed. The sections consist of a number of creatively crafted themes, each one presented by a dignified cast of present day Bible expositors. Here are the themes:

The Gospel of the Servant King, (Daniel L. Aiken, President of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary)
Great Moments in Great Places, (Mark L. Bailey, President and Professor of Biblical Exposition at Dallas Theological Seminary.)
Gospel Sermons for the Christian Life (Matt Carter, Pastor of Preaching and Vision, Austin Stone Community Church in Austin, TX)
The Gospel Project (Steve Dighton, Senior Pastor, Lenexa Baptist Church in Lenexa, KS)
Close Encounters (David Epstein, Senior Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, New York, NY)
Growing In Grace (JD Greear, PhD, Lead Pastor, The Summit Church)
Life In A Healthy Church (Jeff Iorg, President, Golden Gate Seminary, Mill Valley, CA)
Preaching the Authority of the Word of God (James MacDonald, Senior Pastor, Harvest Bible Chapel in Chicago, IL)
Detours, Dead Ends and Dry Holes (Adrian Rogers, Pastor Emeritus, Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, TN)
A Walk Through the Psalms (K. Marshall Williams, Pastor, Nazarene Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA)

Toward the end of this volume you will find a series of excellent, instructional articles on sermon preparation, preaching on special occasions like funerals, baby dedications and various holidays, to name a few.

I have to give this volume 5 stars because I LOVE IT! It is a gold mine for any lover of the Word, and a tool chest for preachers.
